ILOILO City – Around 15 WVRAA delegates from Negros Occidental were hit by LBM (loose bowel movement) and hyperacidity but they’re fine now, assured their medical team.
But the cause of their sickness remained unclear, the delegation nurse Teddy Gicalde told Panay News on Tuesday.
“We suspected it was because of the soda and the street food they bought outside the school,” Gicalde said. The Negros delegation was billeted at La Paz Elementary School in La Paz district.
“Or, it could’ve been because of the water they drank that did not come from the billeting school,” he said.
One of the athletes who got sick, runner Luizi Colonia, told Panay News she suffered from vomiting and stomachache. The last food she ate before not feeling well was a hotdog she got from the school canteen, she said.
This reporter was about to interview another athlete when a coach, Lilibeth Dela Peña, arrived. Sought for comment, she told Panay News athletes and coaches were not allowed to speak to the press about the issue. Dela Peña referred this reporter to the school clinic.
Gicalde stressed that the delegation’s “food committee” makes sure every food item from the billeting school’s canteen served to the delegates are healthy and clean.
“We make sure our athletes drink distilled water,” said the nurse. “We discourage them from buying colored drinks, including soda, iced tea and juice, but, you know, kids as they are, they still do.”
Gicalde assured that those who were downed by sickness are now fine. He dismissed LBM and hyperacidity as a “minor case.”
“It could greatly affect the athlete’s performance it was severe dehydration,” he said. “But it was just a minor case, and the medical team managed to attend to the needs of the patients.”/PN
