BAGO City’s Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) joined the simultaneous coastal clean-up conducted by the local government unit (LGU) and Philippine National Police (PNP) in Valladolid, Negros Occidental recently.
A total of six coastal barangays namely Bagumbayan, Central Tabao, Poblacion, Sagua Banwa, Tabao Baybay, and Tabao Proper were cleaned with the help of the residents, 4Ps beneficiaries, CENRO Bago City staff, LGUs, and PNP forces during the litter pickup initiative in support to the government’s environmental thrust to fight marine trash and plastic pollution.
Social distancing and other minimum health standards have been observed during the clean-up.
Valladolid Mayor Enrique Miravalles also took part in the activity as his way of supporting the protection initiative for the municipality’s coastal areas.
Valladolid, a coastal municipality located southwest of Negros Occidental, is popular for their angel wings and other fishery products. Activities like coastal clean-up are necessary to ensure the quality of its fishery products.
Cleaning up the surroundings especially the coastal areas should be a habit since all trash thrown indiscriminately from upland areas eventually ends up in the ocean, river or stream.
“It is important to remove pollution from the natural environment to help protect marine biodiversity. We should do our part as stewards of the environment to conserve the health of our oceans with its ability to produce bounty of marine resources. When taken care of, humans can sustain a harmonious living with the natural environment here on Earth,” said DENR 6 regional executive director Francisco E. Milla, Jr.
Enhanced biodiversity conservation and scaling up of coastal and marine ecosystem program are among the top 10 priority programs of Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu. (DENR 6)
