For love of country

TODAY we remember Filipino heroes who, until their last breath, kept their loyalty to the Philippines and the Filipino people. That is what we need at the moment, living heroes who are pro-people, patriotic and will not sell-out our country to any foreign invaders.

These living heroes should be our true leaders. We have enough of machos and misogynists, puppets and philistines, maligners and misleaders, thieves and tyrants. We need to remember the thousands of Filipinos who bravely faced death to fight for the country’s freedom. Their death should not be in vain.

In the recent midterm elections, politicians threw promises around like candy at a parade. All of them promised to give the Philippines a better future – better social services, more job opportunities, and no more poverty. But very few of them mentioned to protect the country’s independence from people with vested interests. There are too many issues that imperil the country’s sovereignty yet we heard too little about these things from our officials.

Today we are confronted with issues that concern the sovereignty of the country and the welfare of the people. These concerns include the controversial $62-million loan from China to fund the construction of the Chico River Dam which contained an express waiver of sovereign immunity over patrimonial assets in favor of a foreign government and the apparent control of China on West Philippine Sea. The existing agreements with United States such as Visiting Forces Agreement and Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement have also remained detrimental for the country as it made the defense capacity stunted and perpetually reliant on US aid.

We dare the public to look into these government deals with countries like China and United States and resolve to resist efforts to sell our sovereignty to other nations and compromise the future of millions of Filipinos.
