Lambunao first in Iloilo to have sanitary landfill

ILOILO – The municipality of Lambunao would be the first in this province to operate a sanitary landfill.

The local government of Lambunao is set to open its sanitary landfill this August, over a month after this was inaugurated on June 26.

The town’s sanitary landfill is located in Barangay Sibacungan.

The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 defines a sanitary landfill as “a waste disposal site designed, constructed, operated and maintained in a manner that exerts engineering control over significant potential environment impacts arising from the development and operation of the facility.”

Yes, according to former mayor Jason Gonzales, Lambunao’s sanitary landfill ensures safe and sanitary disposal of garbage.

“The sanitary landfill has three cells and each cell will last for a maximum of 10 years each,” said Gonzales, now a member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan representing the 3rd District.

Cell 1 is the first to be made operational this August.

Each of the three cells has a capacity of 15 tons of garbage per day.

Gonzales said Lambunao produces an estimated 1.3 tons of garbage daily and these are mostly organic and residual wastes from the public market.

The bulk of the town’s wastes come from the poblacion or town center where most business establishments and schools are located.

The poblacion also has a high-density residential area.

The Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office will be tasked to operate the sanitary landfill.

Lambunao’s controlled dumpsite would ease operating when its sanitary landfill starts functioning. The wastes collected daily are dumped at the controlled dumpsite and are immediately covered with soil to prevent the spread of foul odor. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency/PN)
