OTON, Iloilo – Forty-five farmers and fishers who are members of the Movement for Agrarian and Rural Advancement (MARA) in Barangay Trapiche were given P500,000 worth of livelihood project.

The seed capital was taken from the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) through the Payapa at Masaganang Pamayanan (Pamana) program.

Of the 45 members, eight were identified to be Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries and 37 were classified “poor,” based on the DSWD’s Listahanan database.

The MARA, led by president Manny Cabalonga Jr., received on Tuesday the seed fund for rice trading, pedicabs and fishing boat, and the establishment of a trading post where they sell chicken and hog feeds.

Cabalonga said he is very thankful for the opportunity and promised to do their best to sustain and expand the livelihood project.

Meanwhile Perla Haro, chief of Institutional Development Division, said participants in a series of community consultations identified the additional capital needed for their market-driven and resource-based production of goods and services.

All the participants, especially the beneficiaries, have existing livelihoods that had been operational for not less than 10 years, Haro said.

“The group agreed to consolidate their livelihood projects into an integrated microenterprise that will be managed by the association,” she said.

A lot space was provided by the barangay and the local government to be used as pedicab terminal and trading post.

The association will also build a community-managed credit and savings facility that will give access to basic financial services to members and nonmembers alike.

“They shall act as support to economic activity within the locality while serving as a community empowerment initiative,” she said. (Montesa G. Caoyonan, DSWD Region 6/PN)
