Malay council wants roro ships out of Caticlan port

MALAY, Aklan – The Sangguniang Bayan (SB) of Malay is proposing to transfer roll on, roll off (roro) operations at Caticlan port to another port in the province.

SB member Maylynn Aguirre-Graf suggested removing roro vessels at the Caticlan port – the main jump-off point to the world-famous Boracay Island – to minimize congestion in the area.

“This would be the right time for other towns in Aklan to accommodate the roro vessels to lessen the congestion in Caticlan area,” Aguirre-Graf said. “The roro operation is too much to handle for the local government of Malay.”

Malay vice mayor Abram Sualog said Buruanga is interested to accommodate the roro vessels once the construction of its port is completed.

Caticlan port is part of the Strong Republic Nautical Highway, which aims to provide low-cost transport of goods by using roro passenger and cargo vessels, ferries, fastcrafts, and other modes of transportation.

For his part, SB member Jupiter Aelred Gallenero said, “It is unhealthy if roro vessels continue to operate in Caticlan port while Boracay tourists are also using the Caticlan port as entry point.”

Mahirap naman magkasama ang mga cargo trucks ng animals at mga turista sa isang lugar,” he added./PN
