MANILA – Mika Reyes ended her three-year stint with Petron Blaze Spikers after switching to Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors ahead of the 2020 Philippine Super Liga (PSL) season that is scheduled to begin next month.
Reyes, a national women’s volleyball team mainstay, made the announcement on her weekly column Mika’s Block at The Daily Tribune on Wednesday as she described the move as “stepping out of comfort zone.”
“These changes entail a lot of responsibilities and challenges, but rest assured that I would still continue to play my heart out and remain committed with the sport that had been so good to me,” Reyes said.
“The time has come for me to move on and challenge myself again in a new environment,” she added. “It should be taken into consideration that as a professional athlete, I couldn’t shy away from challenges. I am a competitor and I love to push myself to the limit.”
Reyes, however, expressed her gratitude to the Blaze Spikers team that helped her capture three of her four PSL championships. Her other title came when she was still with the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers.
“Being with Petron taught me a lot. I became stronger and bolder to step out of my comfort zone and soar to new heights, not just in volleyball, but life in general,” Reyes said.
“Petron took good care of me and spoiled me. They gave me bigger room to grow and made sure to address all of my concerns — even to a point that I feel that I was already being pampered,” she added.
“Everything that I have right now is because of Petron. I’m really thankful that the Blaze Spikers rolled the dice on me and never got tired of understanding and taking good care of me despite my imperfections,” Reyes concluded.
The former De La Salle University middle blocker is expected to be the cornerstone of Sta. Lucia’s massive revamp after losing half of the squad from last year and also appointing Eddieson Orcullo as the new head coach./PN
