A YOUNG native of the component city of Passi in Iloilo province was part of the team that bagged two golds and a silver in the 18th ASEAN Age-Group Chess Championship that ended on Dec. 3 in Pahang, Malaysia.

Ruslan Pamplona, 7, teamed up with Al-Basher Buto and Vincent Ryu Dimagiba in capturing golds in standard and blitz before placing second in rapid.

In the individual event, Pamplona finished on fifth place in standard and blitz, and settled for seventh place in rapid.

Considering that Pamplona was the youngest in the participating Philippine team, his wins in the regional competition were a huge achievement, said Randy Palomaria, sports development officer for the local government of Passi.

“This is a huge step in his career,” Palomaria told Panay News. “Being just the youngest member of the national team was already an achievement. Winning two golds and a silver made it even better. The Passinhons are proud of him.”

The Philippine team, backed by the Philippine Sports Commission and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, had a dominant stand in the weeklong tournament with 19 gold, 10 silver and five bronze medals.

Winning individual gold medals were Kylen Joy Mordido, Jerlyn Mae San Diego, Michael Concio Jr., Daniel Quizon, Kaye Regidor, Mecel Gadut, Ruelle Canino, Venice Vicente, Jeth Romy Morado, and Brylle Gever Vinluan.

Capturing team golds were Mordido, Samarita and Bea Mendoza; San Diego, Sanchez and Umayan; Regidor, Gadut and Jirah Cutiyog; and Quizon, Justine Mordido and Jave Peteros./PN
