PH’s Yulo wins gold in world gymnastics tilt

MANILA – Carlos Edriel Yulo is not contented with just earning a slot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He just made history in the 49th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships – a golden finish on Saturday night in Stuttgart, Germany.

The 19-year-old Yulo became the first Filipino gymnast to win a gold medal in a world gymnastics competition, men’s floor exercise event.

Yulo scored 15.300 in the floor apparatus final, a huge improvement to the bronze medal he captured in the same event a year ago in Doha, Qatar.

Artem Dolgopyat of Israel settled for a runner-up finish with a score of 15.200 while Xiao Ruteng of China took home the bronze medal with a score of 14.933.

Earlier in the day, Yulo had a decent finish in the men’s all-around finals – 10th place, a huge improvement from his 18th place ranking during the qualifying round.

Yulo registered a total of 84.048 points. He banked on his prowess on the floor, vault and parallel bars.

He, however, scored lower in the pommel horse category with just 12.816.

Earlier last week, Yulo became the second Filipino to qualify in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by reaching the gold medal round, following the feat made by pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena./PN
