ILOILO City – The Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) reminded the public that the 10-day gun ban for the Dinagyang Festival 2024 will begin on Friday, Jan. 19.
The gun ban is part of the security measures for the world-class festival set to highlight on Jan. 27 and 28.
Police Colonel Joeresty Coronica, director of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO), said the Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters approved the gun ban that will start at 12:01 a.m. of Jan. 19 until 12:01 a.m. of Jan. 29.
PNP chief General Benjamin Acorda Jr. approved the suspension of the permit to transport and carry firearms outside of residence in the city during the period.
Only authorized personnel from the PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and other law enforcement agencies engaged in official duties and in uniform attire are permitted to carry firearms.
“We would like to ensure the safety of the public who want to witness the festival that’s why we are implementing the gun ban. I’m warning the civilians not to bring guns and other deadly weapons during the duration of the gun ban,” Coronica said.
ICPO personnel will conduct comprehensive security checks across festival venues, procession routes, and related events, he added.
The ICPO chief further urges locals and visitors alike to fully cooperate with the mandated security measures.
For his part, Police Regional Office 6 director Brigadier General Sidney Villaflor said, “My foremost priority is the safety of the participants and spectators. Let us collectively embrace a culture of vigilance and responsibility to ensure a secure and joyous celebration for everyone involved. Your cooperation is crucial in making this festival a memorable and incident-free Dinagyang experience,” said Villaflor./PN
