ILOILO City – A total of 10 schools in Western Visayas will implement the National Ecosavers Program (NEP) which aims to teach waste segregation to children in public and private schools in the whole country.
Rabbie Chris Carvajal, chief of the Environmental Education and Information Unit (EEIU) of the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Region 6, said the NEP aims to establish an ecological solid waste recovery system in schools by encouraging students to bring recyclable materials in exchange for school supplies or cash.
The following schools were selected to implement the program:

NEP is part of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (Republic Act 9003), which established the legal and technical framework for a systematic, comprehensive and ecological solid waste management program.
Under the NEP, a storage and transaction area for recyclables will be set up in schools and an incentive system for students to exchange recyclable wastes will be established.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, through the EMB, is the lead agency in the planning, implementation and monitoring of the program and provide technical and funding support to Department of Education to enable the schools and the local government units to effectively implement the program.
