BORACAY – Volunteers from electric cooperatives in Western Visayas are helping to fast-track the rehabilitation of this island resort’s power system.

Task Force Kapatid is a volunteer group with members coming from 10 electric cooperatives in the region.

These cooperatives include Iloilo Electric Cooperative I, Iloilo Electric Cooperative II, Iloilo Electric Cooperative III, Capiz Electric Cooperative, Guimaras Electric Cooperative, Antique Electric Cooperative, Northern Negros Electric Cooperative, Negros Occidental Electric Cooperative, Central Negros Electric Cooperative, and Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco).

The task force was mobilized beginning Sept. 6. It aims to make Boracay’s distribution lines ready in time for the island reopening on Oct. 26.

It is one of the programs of the National Electric Administration (NEA).

According to Akelco general manager Alexis Regalado, this is the third time that Task Force Kapatid was mobilized. The other two were in 1997 and 2002.

Isang buwan sila sa Boracay at may extension kapag hindi pa matapos ang rehabilitasyon sa Oktubre,” Regalado added.

The task force has 80 technical personnel who use utility vehicles and heavy line trucks to relocate more than 400 electric posts affected by the 12-meter expansion of Boracay’s main road.

Three engineers from NEA will be supervising the rehabilitation works of the task force.

(With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
