BACOLOD City – Starting next month, about 1,300 students and out-of-school youths will be working for the city government under the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES).
For 15 days, they will help the city government conduct skills updating of barangays, monitor business establishments without business permits and deliver notices of delinquency to erring taxpayers.
The city government is mandated to implement the SPES yearly. The program aims to provide temporary employment to poor students, which will help them earn income to sustain their studies in the next school year, said Amy Judicpa, information officer of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region 6.
The program is also open to out-of-school youths who intend to go back to school, added Judicpa.
Public Employment and Services Office head Anthony Ayco said of the 1,300, only 90 – who will receive P7,000 each – are sponsored by DOLE.
The city government will give P3,000 each to the rest of the “summer jobbers,” Ayco added.
Last year, DOLE shouldered the salary of 150 out of 1,650 workers under SPES in Bacolod.
Ayco said many have applied to avail themselves of summer jobs at city hall but due to the limited budget, only a few were accepted./PN
