ILOILO City – The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has identified 135 fire-prone areas in this city. Some of these are entire barangays.

The City Proper, which is made up of 45 barangays, has the most number of fire-prone areas, including the entirety of 10 villages.

According to Iloilo City fire marshal Chief Inspector Cristopher Regencia, common to all these fire-prone areas were the following:

* narrow alleys – due to encroaching illegal structures and illegally parked vehicles

* houses made of light materials and constructed closely to one another

* chaotic electrical connections

Regencia said barangay officials of these villages should remove the road obstructions so that during fire emergencies, fire trucks could quickly get to the fire scene.

The standard response time of BFP to fire calls is only between five to seven minutes.

Sadly, said Regencia, barangay officials and the villagers appeared “passive.”

Considered as fire-prone barangays (entire village) in the City Proper are the following:

* Concepcion

* Monica Blumentritt

* Ortiz

* Rizal Estanzuela

* Rizal Palapala 1

* Rizal Palapala 2

* Tanza Baybay

* Tanza Bonifacio

* Veterans Village

* Zamora-Milleza

* Rima-Rizal – interior portion (toward coastal area)

* Rizal Ibarra – interior portion

* San Felix – interior portion (toward Ybiernas Street)
