FOURTEEN Western Visayas-based schools were set to compete in the Iloilo 14 and Under Girls Volleyball League starting Sept. 9 at the Ateneo de Iloilo Gym in Iloilo City.

“We decided to organize this type of league after we observed during the Isuzu 17 and Under tournament that players aged 14 and below are not given that much exposure or playing time by their schools,” said organizer Ruding Villaruz.

The tournament shall be played every Saturday and Sunday only.

“With the support extended by schools, stakeholders and the Philippine Sports Commission, we now have a volleyball league for players born 2003 onwards,” Villaruz said.

The 14 teams were divided into two groups.

Bracket A comprised Cabatuan, San Miguel, Dumangas, Hua Siong, Ateneo de Iloilo, Central Philippine University, and Western Visayas State University.

Bracket B, on the other hand, was composed of La Paz National High School, Tay Tung Bacolod, Pavia, University of San Agustin, Iloilo City National High School, I. Arroyo Elementary School, and SNSES.

According to league commissioner Theimann Suñer, the tournament will give young volleybelles an avenue to “showcase their talent and develop self-confidence” as they move to higher leagues./PN
