MANILA – Fifteen Western Visayas-based volleybelles have been rostered for their respective schools in the NCAA Season 97 women’s volleyball which begins today at the San Juan Arena.
Aklan has the most number of Region 6-based volleybelles in the league with six, followed by Bacolod City with five, Iloilo City with three and Sagay City with one.
Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers have six WV recruits in Aklanons Maliey Amante, Angel Rose Bautista, Riza Rose, Jonazel Egera, Mary May Ruiz, and Jerry Lyn Laurente, and Ilongga Renesa Melgar.
Lyceum of the Philippines Lady Pirates, meanwhile, will parade two Bacolod City-based volleybelles in sophomore Joan Doguna and rookie Jewel Therese Maligmat.
University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas will have Bacolod City’s Krisha Cordero, while another Bacolodnon in Anne Leyn Formento will suit up for Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals.
San Sebastian College Lady Stags, on the other hand, will have returning Sagay City native Reyann Canete in its roster, same with Mapua University Lady Cardinals which still has Ilongga Princess Babiera.
Arellano University Lady Chiefs has newcomer Trina Marice Abay of Bacolod City in their opening day roster while La Paz, Iloilo City’s Lara Mae Silva is set to debut for the Letran Lady Knights.
Other schools competing in the NCAA Season 97 women’s volleyball tournament are San Beda University Red Lionesses and College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers.
Just like in NCAA men’s basketball, double header volleyball matches are to be played starting at 12 noon every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and to be shown live on GTV.
The last team to win an NCAA women’s volleyball championship was the Lady Chiefs during Season 94 in 2019. The Season 95 was played in early 2020 but was eventually cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic./PN
