ILOILO City – Seventeen schools in Western Visayas plan to raise tuition fees for school year 2018-2019.
These were private and tertiary schools not covered by the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, according to Dr. Cesar Medina, director of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in Region 6.
CHED’s central office will have the last say on the applications of these schools and the rate of increase, said Medina.
The increase should not go beyond the region’s inflation rate which would be determined by the National Economic and Development Authority, according to the director.
Medina recalled that last school year, some schools sought to increase their tuition fees by over a hundred percent.
He did not discount the possibility that more schools would seek to increase their tuition fees this year.
“Marami na pong nag-signify,” Medina revealed, adding that the applications mostly covered from second year to fourth year level.
The director also said CHED Region 6 formed a committee that would further study the proposed tuition fee increases in case the applicant schools fail to get the approval of CHED’s central office and they would file an appeal./PN
