KALIBO, Aklan – Descendants and local officials commemorated the heroic deeds of the province’s 19 martyrs who dedicated their lives against oppressors during the Spanish era.
A civic military parade from Kalibo Pastrana Park to Aklan Freedom Shrine was conducted to mark the 122nd death anniversary of the local heroes on Saturday, March 23.
Other activities during the event were wreath laying ceremony, the twenty-one gun salute, taps and ruffle, spoken word contest, showcase of talents, and re-enactment of the final moments and execution of General Castillo and 19 Martyrs of Aklan titled “Dyez Y Nueve: The Katipunan of Aklan” by local actors and volunteers.
The official trailer of a full-length film “Daan Patungong Tawaya” on the heroism of Katipuneros was also launched.
Kalibo town mayor William Lachica urged the younger generation to reflect on the legacy and emulate the heroism of the 19 Martyrs of Aklan.
“These revered local heroes made significant contributions which will serve as constant reminder to the young ones to fear God and love our country,” he said. (With a report from Akean Forum/PN)
