MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte assured close to 190 rebel returnees of financial assistance, education, training, and integration into the Armed Forces.

Duterte hosted a dinner at Malacañang for the third batch of former New People’s Army (NPA) members on Tuesday night.

The NPA has been fighting the government over the last 50 years and brought Filipinos nothing but misery, the President said.

He reiterated his opposition to having a coalition government with the communist rebels.

Such demand is not acceptable, he stressed, noting that one must win the elections to gain political power.

Duterte also promised jobs to rebels who surrendered firearms.

Employment opportunities will be created, what with the government’s massive infrastructure development, he said.

Moreover, he vowed to send female rebel returnees to Hong Kong “to see the achievements of capitalist societies, contrary to the promises of the NPA,” the Presidential Communications Office said./PN
