THE Department of Agriculture (DA) said over two million hectares of crops might be affected by Typhoon “Goring,” which is currently tracking the northwest part of the country.
Based on the DA’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Operations Center’s situation bulletin as of Aug. 29, “area of standing crops that may be affected by Typhoon ‘Goring’ totals to 2,150,881 hectares.”
Broken down, 1,602,482 hectares of rice fields are expected to be hit, while 548,399 hectares of corn fields are seen to be affected by the weather disturbance.
“The possible effects of Goring may be experienced in CAR, Region I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII and VIII,” the DA said.
The Agriculture department said it is currently undertaking the following in preparation for the typhoon’s onslaught:
* Activation of DA Regional DRRM Operations Centers
* Provided advisories to farmers and fisherfolk to be affected by ‘Goring’
* Submission of Situationer Reports, particularly on agricultural areas, from DA Regional Field Office
* Positioning seeds for rice and corn, drugs and biologics for livestock and poultry in safe storage facilities ready for distribution to affected farmers
* Close coordination with DOST-PAGASA regarding the monitoring of ‘Goring’
* Coordination with other National and Regional DRRM-related offices, as well as local government unit counterparts, in monitoring the possible impacts of TY Goring
“The DA-DRRM Operations Center will continuously provide updates regarding Goring,” the DA said. (GMA Integrated News)
