2 ‘barkers’ arrested

ILOILO City – Policemen arrested two barkers.

Melber Junio of Barangay Kauswagan, City Proper and Jeric Boris of Barangay Rizal Pala-Pala, City Proper violated Regulation Ordinance No. 2014-194 that prohibited barkers, according to Superintendent Jonathan Pablito, Police Station 1 chief.

Barkers, under Regulation Ordinance No. 2014-194, are individuals who “call for, facilitate, induce or convince commuters to board a particular or preferred public utility vehicle such as a jeepney, taxi, van, and bus for the purpose of extracting an amount from the vehicle’s driver.”

The police recovered from Junio P52. Boris, on the other hand, yielded P70.

A violator of the ordinance could be jailed for a minimum of three months but not more than six months.

The city government came up with this ordinance in 2014 following complaints about barkers harassing jeepney drivers who did not give them money. Barkers may be apprehended by the police or through citizen’s arrest at any time./PN
