ILOILO City – Two men with multiple gunshot wounds were found dead late Monday night in Barangay Tiring, Cabatuan, Iloilo.

Jonathan Peñafiel, 36, was a resident of R. Mapa Street, Mandurriao district while friend Michael Malones, 29, was from Barangay Magdalo, La Paz district.

Malones died of six gunshot wounds on the body. Peñafiel, on the other hand, had gunshot wounds on the body and forehead.

Passersby found the bodies around 10:30 p.m. Prior to this, residents claimed seeing a silver pickup stop and hearing the persons inside the vehicle arguing.

After several bursts of gunfire, the pickup left, residents told the Cabatuan police station.

From what the police so far gathered, Peñafiel and Malones were last seen alive boarding a pickup at Smallville entertainment complex in Mandurriao.

Cabatuan policemen recovered from Peñafiel’s body money and a cellular phone. Malones’ phone was also recovered.

According to Malones’ father Rodolfo, Peñafiel fetched his son from their house around 5:30 p.m. on Monday. The two did not say where they were going.

The killings could be drug-related, said Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, director of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office.

Malones’ phone contained text messages of a shabu transaction, said Tayaba.

“May nag-order half a kilo of shabu,” he revealed. “All these messages would be validated and investigated para malaman natin who ordered.”

Sources said the victims had a contact person detained at a Bureau of Jail Management and Penology prison facility.

La Paz police chief Senior Inspector Rey Sumagaysay said Malones was not in their list of suspected drug personalities./PN
