2 Negrense tracksters nab golds in ASEAN school games

MANILA – Negrenses Ann Katherine Quitoy and Trexie Dela Torre snagged gold medals on the second day of the 2018 ASEAN School Games action on Sunday at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Quitoy, a product of Romanito Maravilla High School, clinched the gold medal in girls javelin throw with record-breaking 49.18m. Fellow Negrense Franz Gela Bintad finished the event on fifth place.

Bacolodnon Dela Torre, meanwhile, also delivered a gold medal for the delegation by topping girls long jump with 5.84m. Finishing with silver and bronze are Malaysia’s Mahira Ishak and Vietnam’s Hoang Giang.

The Philippines’ girls 4×100 relay team – Negrense Julian Pranisa, Jessel Lumapas, Eliza Cuyom, and Jessica Brillantes – finished with a bronze medal.

The Philippines also won a gold medal in girls 400m dash from National University’s Lumapas. Divina Mahusay fell short of a medal finish and landed on fourth place.

The Philippines remained on fifth place in the medal tally with four gold, one silver and five bronze medals behind Indonesia (9-8-12), Malaysia (8-15-7), Thailand (8-8-11), and Vietnam (5-2-2).

Meanwhile, Bacolodnon Harold Alarcon fired 26 points as National University Bullpups-Philippines scored a 142-19 win over Brunei at the start of boys basketball at the Gem In mall in Shah Alam, Malaysia.

On the distaff side, Silay City native Kent Jane Pastrana scored 25 points while Ilongga center Karl Ann Pingol had 14 points and 15 rebounds as the Philippine girls basketball team opened its campaign with a 91-44 victory over Indonesia./PN
