MANILA â Two Philippine boxing delegates advanced to the finals while two others settled for bronze medals in the 29th Southeast Asian Games yesterday.
Mario Fernandez defeated Cambodian Nat Siek Nin via unanimous decision for a chance to bag another gold medal for the Filipino delegation.
Eumir Marcial, meanwhile, knocked out Malaysian Indran Ramakrishnan in Round 1 to barge into the finale and secure a silver medal minimum finish.
Veteran campaigner Charly Suarez and Negros Occidental native Ian Clark Bautista lost their respective bouts against the Thais Wuttichai Masuk and Tanes Ongjunta, respectively, both via unanimous decision.
John Nobel Tupas Marvin had yet to fight Anavat Thongkrathok of Thailand as of this writing.
Earlier, Marvin dominated the light heavyweight division with a unanimous-decision victory over Cambodian Felix Merlin Martinez.
During the quarterfinals, too, Suarez settled for a split-decision victory despite a one-sided performance against hometown bet Khir Akyazlan Azmi in the light flyweight division.
Suarez, who was fighting for the first time in a heavier weight class, dominated Azmi in the first round with hard body punches before unloading a big cross on a three-punch combination in the third to make Azmi kiss the canvas.
âNag-concentrate talaga ako sa laban dahil mahirap na Malaysian ang kalaban ko,â said Suarez. âSinusubukan ko talagang mapabagsak at nakatiyempo ako noong third. Akala ko nga po hindi bibilangan e.â
The lone casualty in the Philippine boxing team was Carlos Paalam (light flyweight), who suffered a controversial unanimous-decision loss to Malaysian Muhammad Fuad.
Paalam was the aggressor the entire match and survived numerous illegal moves by Fuad but it was still the Malaysian who was declared the winner â to the surprise of many, including boxing delegation head Ed Picson.
âIâd rather not comment on it except that I felt that we won,â Picson said. âWe thought we should have won all the fights. But thatâs boxing. We canât tell how other people look at the fight.â/PN
