BACOLOD City – Two sugarcane workers or sakadas were stabbed dead on Sunday afternoon in Hacienda Jovillanos, Barangay Cansilayan, Murcia town.
Apolinario Martisano Nietes, 40, and Genebert Gomez Padrillan, 19, both residents of Barangay Hatay-Hatay, Bugasong, Antique province, were declared dead on arrival at Bacolod Adventist Hospital.
Suspects Jonathan Paguntalan and his younger brother, Emilio, residents of Barangay Mailum, Bago City, escaped after the incident. Both served as contractors of sugar cane laborers.
Investigation disclosed that the suspects arrived in the hacienda in a habal-habal driven by Wilson Tesalona.
The brothers reportedly went to the hacienda because Mebel Yee, a contractor of sakadas, was there. Yee, according to the laborers, cut off his contract with the suspects after a misunderstanding.
Yee reportedly pushed Jonathan, causing him to fall. The sugar cane workers tried to pacify the two when the suspects misunderstood the situation and started stabbing the sakadas.
The two victims were reportedly sitting under a mango tree when they were stabbed.
The Murcia police arrested Tesalona after he was pointed by Yee as a companion of the suspects./PN
