ILOILO – The municipalities of Zarraga and San Enrique declared a state of calamity following the onslaught of tropical storm “Marce.”
With the declaration, these local government units can now use their respective quick response funds which is 30 percent of their calamity and trust funds, said Jerry Bionat, chief of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).
Large swathes of agricultural lands in Zarraga and San Enrique were inundated or destroyed by “Marce” on Nov. 25.
The Sangguniang Bayan of Zarraga (2nd District) placed the municipality under a state of calamity on Monday while that of San Enrique (4th District) did so on Tuesday.
“The provincial government and other local government units in the country as well as government agencies can extend help to these towns,” Bionat told Panay News.
The component city of Passi and the municipality of Dumangas also have plans of declare a state of calamity, he revealed.
From P410 million on Monday, the storm’s damage to Iloilo province rose to P50,5778,860 on Tuesday, PDRRMO data showed.
The agriculture sector incurred the biggest losses at P23,372,360.
Losses in infrastructures, on the other hand, reached P21,115,500 (roads) and P5,860,000 (public markets).
The fisheries sector suffered losses reaching P230,000.
Bioanat said 11, 330 families in 237 barangays of 21 municipalities were displaced by “Marce.”
The PDRRMO recorded 260 houses partially damaged and 15 houses totally damaged.
The storm’s big waves also damaged motorboats (79 partially and 62 totally).
The province recorded just one storm casualty – a 17-year-old lad from Barangay Libongcogon, Zarraga. He crossed the river and drowned./PN
