20 DEAD, 6 MISSING DUE TO ‘PAENG’ IN WV

ILOILO City – The death toll due to Tropical Storm “Paeng” in Western Visayas has reached 20 and six remained missing as of Monday, Oct. 31.

Majority of the confirmed death cases were caused by drowning due to flashfloods, according to the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) – Emergency Operations Center (EOC), through the Management of the Dead and the Missing (MDM) Cluster headed by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

The most number of casualties reported came from Antique province with nine, followed by Aklan with six deaths, Iloilo with three, and Capiz with two.

The list of casualties and their cause of deaths are as follows:

* Jaypee Buendia, 27, male — due to flashflood in Barangay San Roque, Tapaz, Capiz

* Genevev Nacion, 25, female – carried away by strong current of flood in Barangay Guibongon, Bayunan, San Joaquin, Iloilo

* Ruiz Dalupines, 57, male – drowning and suffocation in mud in Barangay Dalagsaan, Libacao, Aklan

* Raul Baet, 52, male – drowning and suffocation in mud in Barangay Loctuga, Libacao, Aklan

* Nelson Baet, 40, male – drowning in Barangay Loctuga, Libacao, Aklan

* Lyn Lyn Baet, 28, female – drowning and suffocation in mud in Barangay Loctuga, Libacao, Aklan

* Melo Katimpo, 31, male – drowning and suffocation in mud in Barangay Loctuga, Libacao, Aklan

* Ernesto Lunasco, 67, male – carried away by strong current of flood in Barangay Nagdayao, Sibalom, Antique

* Rodolfo Estoleros, 61, male – due to cardiac arrest/hypothermia in Barangay Iglanot, Sibalom, Antique

* Lunimar Naranjo, 33, male – drowning in Barangay Piape I, Hamtic, Antique

* Juan Sombilon, 55, male – covered by landslide in Barangay Camandagan, Tobias Fornier, Antique

* Guillermo Timbad, 35, male – drowning in Sitio Cabudapi, Poblacion, Patnongon, Antique

* Francisco Nanlabi, male (age not specified) – swept by strong current of flood in Barangay Samalage, Patnongon, Antique

* Jimmy Otico, 60, male – drowning in Barangay Tamayoc, Patnongon, Antique

* Wenson Nanlabi, 49, male – swept by strong current of flood in Barangay Samalague, Patnongon, Antique

* Christine Joy Pacheco, 28, female – drowning in Sitio, Cabudapi, Patnongon, Antique

* Teddy Martelino, 74, male – drowning in Barangay Poblacion, Lezo, Aklan

* Cambi Percita, 81, female – drowning in Sitio Imugan, Barangay Tingcupon, Panitan, Capiz

* Federico Pagapulan, 74, male – drowning in Barangay Dalije, Miag-ao, Iloilo, and

* Roger Caro, 50, male (from Barangay Bololacao, New Lucena) – drowning in Barangay Jalaud Norte, Zarraga, Iloilo

As of this writing, another death was logged in Igbaras, Iloilo. A 12-year-old male identified as Jonathan Malanum Enar Jr. was covered by mud after a landslide incident in Barangay Mulangan, Igbaras around 4:45 a.m. on Monday.

The family members were sleeping when the landslide occurred. The victim’s father, Jonathan Sr., and his minor brother were able to escape from the mud flood.

In the search and retrieval operation of the Igbaras Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MRDDMO) and other local authorities, the body of the victim was still in the mosquito net when retrieved.

Meanwhile, the RDRRMC-EOC 6 also recorded six missing due to flooding in the region.

The list include the following:

* 29-year-old female in Barangay Alimono, Passi City, Iloilo (with local government unit report)

* 60-year-old male in Sitio Omlit, Libacao, Aklan (with Municipal Local Government Operations Office special report)

* 24-year-old (gender not specified) – Sibalom, Antique

* (no age and gender specified) – Sition, Mantud, Laua-an, Antique

* (no age and gender specified) – Lugta, Laua-an, Antique

* 38-year-old male – Poblacion, Patnongon, Antique

Meanwhile, the number of affected population in the region has risen to 217,300 families composed of 821,497 persons from 1,432 barangays.

A total of 935 evacuation centers are currently open in the region catering to 19,953 families composed of 74,283 persons.

Also, the number of damaged houses increased to 2,449, of which 2,153 were partially damaged while 296 were totally damaged.

The breakdown of damaged houses as validated by the Department of Social Welfare and Development 6 are the following:

*Aklan – 1 partially damaged, 7 totally damaged

* Antique – 9 partially damaged, 2 totally damaged

* Capiz – 307 partially damaged, 8 totally damaged

* Iloilo province and Iloilo City – 1,351 partially damaged, 219 totally damaged

* Negros Occidental – 485 partially damaged, 60 totally damaged

Moreover, the number of flooded barangays in the region is 182. As of this writing, only Capiz gave update that the flooding in 36 of the 149 flooded barangays have already subsided.

Also, 31 barangays in the region have reported landslide incidents. Nine of these are in Aklan, 16 barangays in Antique, and four barangays in Negros Occidental.

As to the roads and bridges, as of Oct. 30, four roads and two bridges in Antique were impassable; 14 roads in Capiz were impassable; one bridge and three roads in Iloilo were impassable; and one road in Negros Occidental was impassable./PN
