ILOILO City – The crime volume in Western Visayas last year dropped by 22.74 percent, according to the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).
The regional police recorded 54,610 crime incidents in 2016. The following year, it registered 40,991, said Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson.
Index crimes decreased by 23.58 percent – 31,012 last year, down from 40,503 in 2016.
Index crimes are crimes against persons and properties such as murder, homicide, physical injuries, rape, hijacking of motor vehicles, robbery and theft, among others.
The PRO-6, meanwhile, reported a surge in the number of arrested fugitives from justice – 3,217 in 2017, up by 87.47 from 1,716 in 2016.
In illegal gambling, the regional police also recorded 20.53-percent increase in arrests – 804 in 2017, up from 667 in 2016.
In the anti-illegal drug campaign, police across Western Visayas made a total of 1,984 arrests from 1,345 operations.
Of these arrests, 71 were high-value targets, said Gorero.
Fifteen drug personalities died in police operations in 2017. They included drug lord Richard Prevendido and son Jason. The father and son were killed in a shootout with policemen on Sept. 1, 2017 in Barangay Balabago, Jaro, Iloilo City.
These accomplishments, said Gorero, should inspire policemen to work harder this 2018, especially in the campaign against illegal drugs.
He also asked the help of the community and the media./PN
