2021 Armenian Rapid Championship underway; Petrosyan leads

THIS YEAR’S edition of the annual Armenian Rapid Chess Championship started Tuesday, March 2 in Yerevan, Armenia and after five rounds, GM Manuel Petrosyan leads the event by a hairline half-point.

The nine-round Swiss tournament, with a time format of 15 minutes base reflection time and five seconds increment per move, attracted 48 players including most of the participants in the just-concluded 81st Armenian Highest League Chess Championship. The event is also being held this year in memory of the late GM Ashot Anastasian (1964-2016). It’s further nice to see the eminent 69-year old GM Rafael Vaganian, the 2019 World Seniors’ Champion in the 65+ age category, competing in fast play with the younger generation. He hasn’t lost a game in five rounds, but has only managed to win one. The two-day competition ends March 3.

The top twelve in the standings: 1. Petrosyan, 4½; 2-5. Ter-Sahakyan, Babujian, Simonian, Petrosian, 4; 6-12.  Shahinyan, Melkonyan, Ohanyan, T. Harutyunian, Alaverdyan, Hakobyan, G. Harutjunyan, 3½.
