MANILA – The Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) plan for a three-day 2022 national elections may lead to more manipulation or vote-rigging, Senator Imee Marcos warned.
In a radio interview over the weekend, Marcos said this plan to conduct the elections for two to three days to minimize the number of voters flocking to voting precincts is concerning.
“Sabi [ng Comelec] willing sila kahit tatlong araw magtrabaho. Tatlong araw na eleksyon pero syempre takot din tayo nun dahil ‘pag long-playing mas maraming dayaan. Nakakanerbyos,” Marcos said.
“Another probability [is] ipaghiwalay ang local sa national. Ibig sabihin kasi may local sa 2022, may local voting din,” she added. “Puwede rin ‘yun kasi ‘yung bilangan puwedeng local muna.”
House Deputy Majority Leader Mikey Arroyo on Thursday asked the Comelec if it was considering the postponement of the 2022 elections due to health and safety concerns brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.
However, the commission said it sees no need to cancel the polls even if the pandemic persists. Malacañang also rejected the said suggestion.
Meanwhile, Marcos added that the measure introduced by Rep. Stella Quimbo of Marikina City authorizing Comelec to allow senior citizens to vote via mail from their own homes is worth exploring.
“Baka puwede ‘yun as option. Kung saan mas maayos naman pwede ‘yan kolektahin ng embassy kasi sa online lahat kabado,” Marcos said. “All these things we need to explore para sa akin go na go na ang eleksyon, pero hanap tayo ng paraan.”/PN
