FOR THE third time in history, we are opening the Peter’s Prize for Film.
Three minutes.
Silent.
***
The film prize started in 2019, won by Richard Olano, Jr. of Sapian, Capiz for his film “Litanya sang Dutang Ginpatumbayaan”.
The second edition of the film prize was in 2021, won by Francis Ryan Pabiania of Isabela, Negros Occidental for his film “Paghibi sang Langit”.
If we are running the film prize every two years, then it is logical to have the third edition in 2023.
Can you win it?
***
Along with the film prize is The Peter Solis Nery Foundation International Film Festival (ThePSNFIFF).
The festival is small, but we always find time to screen all the submitted films since our first year.
And screen them to the public, we do.
Which is nice because we see the growth of the quality of film submissions through the years.
***
The film prize contest was originally a P10,000 winner-takes-all.
Only one grand winner of P10,000.
This year, we will also award P1,000 to each of the two other films in the top three.
***
So, if you win first prize, you get P10,000.
If you placed second prize, you get P1,000.
If you placed third prize, you get P1,000.
Of course, we will not call them second or third prizes.
Maybe we can call them Special Jury Prizes.
***
All three winners will get a Certificate of Award.
But only the grand prize winner will receive the Peter’s Prize medallion, and the commission to be The Peter Solis Nery Foundation Ambassador for Film.
***
We will only accept online submissions.
Films should be 160-180 seconds long.
If you are wise, you should be in the 170-179 seconds length, or exactly 180 seconds, including the credits.
***
Films in mp4 format should be sent to (via Google drive submission): 500tinaga@gmail.com before midnight of May 31, 2023.
Submission period is May 28-31.
Do not even think that we will extend the deadline.
***
All accepted films become official selections of The Peter Solis Nery Foundation International Film Festival 2023.
We will require posters for your films.
And we will award festival laurels, which you can incorporate in your posters.
***
Watch some silent films to understand “silent”.
Or look for our entry films online.
On YouTube, there’s “The Films of the 2019 Peter’s Prize for Film”.
There’s also “The PSNFIFF 2019 Trailer”.
***
We accept films with musical scoring, sound effects, intertitle (or title cards), and ambient sounds.
If the title cards—bits of dialogue in text frames, are in languages other than English, they must be accompanied by subtitles in English.
***
We want to keep our reputation as “the most silent film festival in the world”.
Can you let your film speak a lot without spoken words?
***
The film contest has an open theme.
Open category, open genre.
You can make any film you like for as long as they are silent and 180 seconds long maximum (160 seconds minimum).
We have seen them all before:
Advocacy films.
MTV and music videos.
Dance films.
Straightforward narratives.
Experimental.
Spoofs.
What’s your style?
***
Most of our winners have been the experimental films.
But that’s just the jury’s choice.
In the end, we want films that surprise the viewers.
We want your unique style, and artistic view of life.
We want your unique voice, even if your film is silent.
***
Oh, and let your film have universal appeal.
Although we had notable Filipino filmmakers like Tara Illenberger judging our competition in 2019, we had an all-Hollywood only jury in 2021.
We don’t know yet who will be judging this year, so let your dreams, and your films, go big!/PN
