ILOILO City – Of the 44,000 dog population in this city, the City Veterinarian’s Office (CVO) has so far vaccinated 24,914 dogs against rabies.

This is a 70-percent accomplishment rate as of May 23, said Dr. Tomas Forteza Jr., city veterinarian. CVO personnel are going around barangays giving dogs free vaccination against rabies.

“Our team sets an 80-percent target for this year until 2020,” he said.

Forteza urged barangay officials and pet owners to coordinate with the CVO for the free anti-rabies vaccinations.

CVO is expected to finish vaccination activities in the remaining barangays in Molo this month, and will proceed to the City Proper.

The Anti-Rabies Act of 2007 provides a system for the control, prevention of the spread, and eventual eradication of human and animal rabies.

“We would like to challenge every Ilonggo to be responsible pet owners. Let your pets be vaccinated,” stressed Forteza.

CVO partners with Department of Agriculture in implementing the program while there are also donations and sponsorships from Knights of Columbus, Rotary Club and other non-government organizations. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
