MANILA – Twenty-seven more inmates from the Correctional Institute for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City got infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said.

The 27 people deprived of liberty were among the 51 CIW inmates that were tested for the virus last week. The inmates are in good health condition and are asymptomatic of the virus.

“Continuous focused medical care and monitoring will be provided to ensure that no PDL will develop severe symptoms,” the BuCor said in a statement.

These inmates were then transferred from the all-female prison in Mandaluyong to Site Harry, the designated COVID-19 quarantine area inside the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa.

Meanwhile, Muntinlupa City Mayor Jaime Fresnedi has once again raised opposition on the transfer of another batch of COVID-19 positive inmates to the national penitentiary as it sow fear among his constituents.

Last week, some 18 inmates and one worker of CIW tested positive for COVID-19. They were the first batch of infected CIW inmates transferred to the New Bilibid Prison./PN
