29 persons violate Jordan’s anti-smoking ordinance

JORDAN, Guimaras – The Jordan Anti-Smoking Taskforce apprehended 29 individuals on Dec. 7 for violating the municipality’s anti-smoking ordinance.

Some were smoking in public places, others were selling cigarettes within the prohibited 100-meter radius of schools, the hospital and medical laboratories.

Others were posting advertisements of cigarettes and still, others were selling cigarettes to minors.

These violators were issued with citation tickets – for a fine of P500 each – and their names were forwarded to the Municipal Treasurer’s Office.

The local government unit of Jordan aims to make the municipality tobacco smoke-free.

Mayor Ruben Corpuz also ordered the task force to enforce minimum public health standards to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), specifically the wearing of facemask and face shield, physical distancing and washing of hands with soap and water or disinfectant.

On Dec. 2, Corpuz issued Executive Order No. 61, Series of 2020 “prescribing guidelines on new normal practices in business establishments, public transportation and social gatherings.”

In business establishments:

* wearing of facemasks and social distancing shall be practiced at all times;

* operating hours for business establishments shall not be earlier than 3 a.m. and not later than 9 p.m.;

* must have hand washing area at the entrance and a log book;

* KTVs or karaoke, sound systems intended for band and disco dancing are prohibited;

* a maximum of 50 percent capacity for business establishments shall be observed

* a maximum of 50 percent capacity shall be implemented in venues for gatherings and places for worship

For transportation, meanwhile:

* public utility vehicles (PUVs) including tricycles should have alcohol/sanitizers and a log book for contact tracing purposes

* sea transport at the Jordan Wharf shall be from sunrise to sunset only with 50 percent capacity; other passenger and cargo vessels and PUVs such as jeepneys and tricycles may operate from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m.

* tricycles should have a maximum of three passengers only

* single motorcycles as public conveyance is prohibited/PN
