ILOILO City – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 6 is poised to commence next month the second phase of repairs on the defective P680-million Ungka flyover in Barangay Ungka II, Pavia, Iloilo.

It aims to award a P200-million contract to a yet-to-be-determined winning bidder within April.

The four-lane, 453.7 lineal meters long Ungka flyover opened in September 2022 but was closed two weeks after due to vertical displacement.

The repair will focus on rectifying the settlement or displacement at piers 4, 5, and 6, necessitating the removal of the superstructure above these piers.

The removal will be undertaken by International Builders Corporation (IBC), the original flyover project contractor, at no cost to DPWH-6.

Regional Director Sanny Boy Oropel said the bidding for the second phase of repairs is open to all qualified contractors, including IBC.

The P95-million first phase of repairs, on the other hand, is ongoing. Oropel said it is 27% complete. This includes the jet grouting of all 13 piers of the flyover to strengthen them.

Oropel warned of possible traffic congestion in the area due to the repairs.

DPWH-6 targets to reopen the entire stretch of the Ungka flyover to motorists by August 2024./PN
