MANILA – Three of the 14 children who died after receiving Dengvaxia vaccine had dengue despite immunization, according to the Department of Health (DOH), citing the investigation of the University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital.

Undersecretary Rolando Enrique Domingo said two of the deaths may be due to “vaccine failure.”

“Their tissue samples will be studied further,” Domingo said.

Meanwhile, he said, the deaths of three other children had nothing to do with Dengvaxia, while six did develop other diseases within 30 days after receiving the vaccine.

DOH suspended its P3.5-billion anti-dengue immunization drive after pharmaceutical giant Sanofi Pasteur admitted that its Dengvaxia could lead to a more severe dengue for people who had not previously been infected.

According to DOH, around 733,000 public schoolchildren nine years old and above in three highly endemic regions – Metro Manila, Central Luzon and Calabarzon – received at least the first of three doses of the first licensed dengue vaccine.
Then DOH secretary Janette Garin launched the dengue vaccination initiative in 2016.

Dengue fever is an acute viral infection that affects infants, young children and adults. It is transmitted by day-biting mosquitoes./PN
