ILOILO City – Three residents of Barangay PD Monfort, Dumangas, Iloilo were facing illegal gambling charges.

Police caught Wilfredo Dagum, Efren Magbato and Mario Montales playing the card game tong-its in the village.

They were hauled to the detention facility of the Dumangas police station after their arrest around 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Playing cards and P171 worth of bet money were recovered from them.

They may be charged with violation of Presidential Decree (PD) 1602, which prescribes stiffer penalties on illegal gambling.

“Black jack, lucky nine, poker and its derivatives, monte, baccarat, cuajao, pangguingue, and other card games” are outlawed under PD 1602.
Any person who shall “directly or indirectly” take part in these games may be punished with “prison correccional in its medium period” or a fine ranging from P1,000 to P6,000.
In case of recidivism, the penalty shall be “prision mayor in its medium period” or a fine ranging from P5,000 to P10,000, the law stated./PN
