MANILA – Three Ilonggos were chosen to be part of the Philippine U-15 football team that will compete in the 2017 Asian Football Confederation U-15 contest next month in Bangkok, Thailand.
They are James Carl Tuazon, 13, of the Central Philippines University; RJ Vincent Jarandillo, 14, of the St. Paul School Barotac Nuevo; and Yuki Ferrer, 14, of De La Salle-Zobel.
Tuazon, Jarandillo and Ferrer were selected to be among the 19-man national team lineup after joining the tryouts and training under head coach Emelio “Chieffy” Caligdong.
“I am thankful to be part of the national team,” said Tuazon, a native of Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo. “I just did my best during the tryouts and our training. I will not waste this opportunity given to me.”
“I am glad that my hard work finally paid off,” said Jarandillo, another Barotac Nuevo native who had undergone several trainings overseas. “I will do my best to make my fellow Ilonggos proud.”
According to Ferrer, Caligdong saw his potential during his football tournament in Santa Barbara, Iloilo and recruited him for De La Salle-Zobel.
“It was really a dream come true for me to represent my country,” said the Janiuay town native.
The Philippine U-15 football team is in Iloilo City for a one-month training camp at the Iloilo Sports Complex upon the invitation of Philippine Football Federation president Mariano Araneta, who hails from Barotac Nuevo.
“Football is the No. 1 sports in most Asian countries except the Philippines,” Araneta said. “But we will do our best to compete against them, and I think the boys will be ready by that time.”/PN
