ILOILO City – Artists from the Iloilo Science and Technology University won major prizes in the 2018 Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE 2018) competition.

Two alumni and a student were among the roster of winners, according to the university’s public information officer Heinz Gumaquil.

The alumni, Noel M. Elicana and Alex P. Ordoyo, were grand winners in the Oil/Acrylic on Canvas Category and the Water Media on Paper, respectively.

Student Roland F. Llarena, on the other hand, got a Special Citation in the Oil/Acrylic on Canvas Category.

Elicana’s piece “Kanya-kanyang Tinik, Kanya-kanyang Landas, Iisa ang Ginagalawan” and Ordoyo’s piece “Destroyed” won for them the grand prizes.

Llarena’s piece was titled “The Diminishing Memories of Home.”

The grand winners received a P500,000 financial assistance and a glass trophy designed by Noell El Farol, recipient of the 2009 Metrobank Prize for Achievement in Sculpture.

From their humble beginnings, the winners were “elevated to the status of an icon when it comes to painting” because of their recent feat, said Gumaquil.

“This remarkable feat of our students is a source of pride and inspiration not only for the ISAT-U community but to all Ilonggos around the globe as well,” said Dr. Raul F. Muyong, university president.

Elicana graduated from ISAT-U with a bachelor’s degree in architecture.

Ordoyo, on the other hand, finished with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology Major degree in 2006. He majored in architectural drafting.

In the same university he completed his Master of Science degree in Industrial Education, Major in Drafting Technology in 2017.

Llarena is a Bachelor of Science in Architecture student.

The new awardees also became members of the MADE Network of Winners. They received their awards in a ceremony in Manila in September.

Architect Paul John Cabanalan, also a product of ISAT-U, was also a MADE grand winner last year. (PNA)
