THREE Negros Occidental-based swimmers have broken records at the start of the 31st Milo Little Olympics Visayas Regional Finals at the Cebu City Sports Center pool.
Bustydwyne Jalandra of the University of St. La Salle – Bacolod tallied a new record in the elementary boys 400m freestyle on Friday with 5:13.54, breaking the 5:21.75 of Aklanon Michael Lozada last year.
Alexi Cabayaran of Mambulac Elementary School of Negros Occidental also clinched a new record in the elementary girls 400m freestyle when she swam 5:06.45, faster than Cebu’s Marielle Estreba’s 2016 record of 5:18.53.
Raegan Joseph Garbanzos of the St. Scholastica’s Academy – Bacolod dashed the existing record in the secondary boys 400m freestyle with 4:27.48, breaking the 4:38.97 of Cebuano Andrew Kim Remolino two years ago.
Aklan’s Kyla Soguilon also made her presence felt with two gold medals in secondary girls’ 200m individual medley and 400m freestyle, and bronze in the 200m breaststroke.
Meanwhile Bacolod Tay Tung High School took home three gold, one silver and one bronze medals in athletics over at the CCSC Stadium.
Krisha Dedoyco Aguillon captured gold in secondary girls 400m while Ara Rahbea Delotavo finished with another gold in secondary girls 100m as Jade Cordova ruled the elementary girls 100m hurdles.
Clinching the lone silver medal on opening day was Shaltea Delotavo, who fell short in elementary girls 400m hurdles, while April Anne Dealagdon clinched bronze in elementary girls 1500m.
Tay Tung also started its title defense in secondary girls volleyball with a pair of victories Friday night at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu.
Led by Alyssa Bertolano, Tay Tung cruised to its group match with a perfect 2-0 card with victories over Mary Help Christian School (25-13, 25-10) and Abellana National High School (25-9, 25-21).
In secondary boys basketball, defending champion Tay Tung made a quick work of Cebu Eastern College 62-38 to advance to the quarterfinal round./PN
