ILOILO – The police director of Iloilo was relieved from his post while those of Guimaras and Antique provinces swapped assignments.
They performed poorly in the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) campaign against illegal drugs, said Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).
Senior Superintendent Roderick Augustus Alba is now the Regional Operations chief of the PRO-6. His post at the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) has been taken over by the Regional Operations chief, Senior Superintendent Harold Tuzon on Saturday.
Guimaras police director Senior Superintendent Leo Erwin Agpangan traded places with Antique police director Senior Superintendent Louie Garong.
It was the PNP national headquarters that ordered the reshuffling of the police officers, said Gorero.
Curiously, Alba’s relief on Saturday (Oct. 15) came just two days after his office announced on Oct. 13 that seven police chiefs under the IPPO could face administrative charges for their “zero accomplishments” in the antidrug campaign from Sept. 9 to Oct. 6.
He expressed concern that the “underperformance” will adversely affect the overall performance of the IPPO in the Oplan Double Barrel against drug trafficking.
But Alba took his axing in stride. For the past 10 months, he kept Iloilo – with 42 municipalities and one component city – peaceful and orderly, he insisted.
He also said his men conducted operations against illegal drugs and illegal gambling.
“I tried hard and I did my best. I’m thankful to the local government units and provincial government for their support,” said Alba.
The formal turnover of command is today in Camp Delgado, the headquarters of the PRO-6 in Iloilo City.
Rumors of Alba’s relief had been circulating since July and these prompted Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. to issue a statement that the provincial police director was “doing good” in the campaign against illegal drugs.
Defensor, however, said he won’t object should the PRO-6 decide to give Iloilo a new police director.
Defensor said he would leave it to the PRO-6 or the PNP to decide on the IPPO’s leadership.
“Kon pahalinon sia, indi man ta ka pugong,” said Defensor in July.
Alba was appointed to head the IPPO on Dec. 7, 2015. He was a member of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) Class 1992.
The IPPO under Alba is “supportive of the President’s campaign against illegal drugs because we are against illegal drugs,” the provincial police director told Panay News in a previous interview.
As of Oct. 5, the IPPO under Alba had arrested a total of five high-value targets (HVT) in the campaign against illegal drugs this year.
The first to be arrested was Sony Boy Peñaflorida alias Eagle. He was apprehended with an unlicensed firearm during a checkpoint on March 18 in Sara, Iloilo.
On July 25, another HVT in the person of Reynaldo Gamboa of Barangay Antonio Yusay, Sara was arrested in a buy-bust operation in Barangay Poblacion, Sara.
On the other hand, Marcliesar Sualog of Barangay Poblacion, Sara was apprehended in a buy-bust operation on Sept. 12.
The other two HVTs arrested were Glayza Kian Hie Jocson and Ariel Demun, both of Barangay Poblacion, Sara. They were caught in a buy-bust operation on Aug. 5.
All five were believed to be affiliated with the Balume drug group operating in the 5th district of Iloilo.
Meanwhile, IPPO arrested a total of 97 low-value targets (LVT) from July 1 to Oct. 5./PN
