3 suspects in cop’s murder arrested

ILOILO City – The three men charged with murder for the death of a police officer two years ago were arrested in simultaneous police operations in the town of Leganes, Iloilo.

The following were taken to the Leganes police station:

* Nestor Madera, 29, of Barangay Gua-an, Leganes

* Bobby Madera, 41, of Barangay Nabitasan, Leganes

* Sandy Castañeda, 30, of Barangay Guinobatan, Leganes

The Maderas were siblings. Castañeda was their brother-in-law.

On May 16 the brothers were separately caught in their respective houses around 4 p.m.

Castañeda, meanwhile, surrendered to the police.

According to Senior Inspector Dadje Delima, Leganes police chief, the three were suspects in the stabbing of Police Officer 1 Ramy Onelongo, an intelligence officer of the Leganes police station, on March 21, 2016.

They were charged with murder but disappeared from Leganes before Judge Danilo Galvez of the Regional Trial Court, Branch 24 could issue the arrest warrants.

Delima said there were two other suspects: Lito Carena of Lemery, Iloilo (detained at the Iloilo District Jail in Barangay Nanga, Pototan, Iloilo since 2016) and a certain Pato Guillergan (out on bail).

Onelongo was stabbed to death at a store where the suspects were in a drinking binge.

“We recently received information that the suspects returned to their houses,” said Delima.

With the suspects’ arrest, the family of Onelongo could now get the justice it has been seeking, he added./PN
