ILOILO City – The 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) of the Philippine Army has warned of more encounters with the remaining members of the New People’s Army (NPA) if they continue to resist surrendering to authorities. This follows the death of a rebel fighter in Capiz.
Major General Michael Samson, commander of 3ID, stressed that the military would intensify efforts to apprehend the remaining rebels.
“We will continue pursuing those who refuse to return to the fold of law. However, it is in their best interest to lay down their arms and embrace peace,” Samson said.
The latest development came after the Army’s 12th Infantry Battalion (IB) discovered the remains of Gino Giganto, alias Luyong, a member of the dismantled Central Front of the Komiteng Rehiyon-Panay, in Sitio Bidang, Barangay Siya, Tapaz, Capiz, on April 21.
Giganto, a native of Barangay Lahug, Tapaz, reportedly died from complications of an untreated illness, with former rebels confirming his identity.
Lieutenant Colonel Vicel Jan Garsuta, commander of the 12th IB, revealed that Giganto had expressed his desire to surrender and seek medical treatment but was reportedly stopped by his comrades. His body was then buried by his fellow rebels without notifying his family.
Samson expressed condolences to the Giganto family and criticized the inhumane actions of the rebel group.
“The abandonment of Giganto’s body by the rebels and the withholding of information from his family reflect the group’s disregard for the welfare of its members,” he said. “His death is a tragic reminder of the futility of armed struggle and the misery it inflicts on those who are misled.”
Samson urged remaining rebels to consider returning to their families and the government, offering the Enhanced-Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) as an opportunity for a peaceful and secure future.
“This is their chance for a new life, free from fear and violence,” he added./PN
