ILOILO City – A magnitude 4.8 earthquake jolted parts of Panay Island last night a little over 24 hours after typhoon “Ursula” ripped its northern portion on Christmas Day.
The epicenter of the 8:19 p.m. quake was Dumarao, Capiz, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The earthquake was tectonic in origin, it added.
Facebook posts showed the tremor was also felt in parts of Iloilo province.
The United State Geological Survey (USGS), on the other hand, placed the magnitude at 4.9 and with a depth of 38.3 kilometers. It also placed the epicenter in Barangay Alimono, Passi City, Iloilo province.
There was no reported damage to property or loss of lives.
No aftershocks were recorded.
The Dumarao earthquake was the second recorded by the institute in Western Visayas yesterday.
Seismic instruments of Phivolcs recorded an earthquake, too, at 2.47 a.m. with its epicenter in Hinobaan, Negros Occidental.
It was magnitude 2.7 and also tectonic in origin. There were no aftershocks recorded./PN
