MANILA – Four agreements will be signed when President Rodrigo Duterte visits South Korea from June 3 to 5, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.
This will be Duterte’s first official visit to the Republic of Korea (ROK) since he assumed office in 2016.
“There will be a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Department of Transportation and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of ROK concerning cooperation in the field of transport,” Undersecretary for Strategic Communications and Research Ernesto Abella on Friday said.
There will also be an MOU on scientific and technological cooperation between the Department of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning of South Korea, added Abella.
“Third, there’ll also be a loan agreement on the New Cebu International Container Port Project between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Export-Import Bank of Korea. That will be with the Department of Finance,” the official said.
He added that an MOU on trade and economic cooperation between the Department of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will also be signed.
“[The visit] basically has to do with conveying to the Republic of Korea the importance of its partnership with the Philippines and to reaffirm the strength of Philippine-Republic of Korea relations,” Abella said.
The DFA said Duterte is also scheduled to meet members of the Filipino community there. There are about 68,000 Filipinos living and working in South Korea./PN
