4 flyovers taking shape in Iloilo; DPWH vows to beat deadline

ILOILO City – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Region 6 vowed to beat the deadline for the completion of the four flyovers being constructed in the city and province of Iloilo.

These are the P680-million four-lane Ungka flyover in Barangay Ungka II, Pavia, Iloilo; the P560-million four-lane Aganan flyover in Barangay Aganan, Pavia; the two-lane Jibao-an flyover along the Iloilo Circumferential Road crossing Mandurriao-San Miguel Road in Mandurriao district; and the two-lane Buhang flyover along the Iloilo Circumferential Road crossing Iloilo-Capiz Road (new route) in Jaro district.

Initially, the Jibao-an and Buhang flyovers had a budget of P180 million each. However, according to DPWH-6 assistant director Jose Al Fruto, each year the central office increases their budget until construction is completed.

“Barring any untoward circumstances”, according to Fruto, they will meet the target completion dates: Ungka in the first quarter of 2022; Aganan in the third quarter of 2022; and Buhang and Jibao-an flyovers in the last part of 2022 or early part of 2023.

UNGKA FLYOVER

Construction crews already started working on the approaches of the 453.70-meter flyover in the Christ the King area, according to Fruto.

Decking is also underway, he added.

The completion date of the Ungka flyover was originally set for July 2021.

DPWH-6 was unable to beat the deadline due to restrictions brought about by the coronavirus pandemic and the delay in the release of funds by the central office.

Project contractor International Builders Corp. (IBC) began the actual construction in January 2020.

The installation of 56 girders covering seven spans, including the 35 meters at the junction of the Sen. Benigno S. Aquino Jr. Avenue and Iloilo Circumferential Road 1 (C1), was completed. Only two spans covering 16 girders are left to be filled.

The completed flyover will stretch from the Petron gasoline station up to the intersection of the Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue and the road leading to Parc Regency Subdivision.

AGANAN FLYOVER

Fruto said they anticipate the completion of the 436.90-meter Aganan flyover in the third quarter of 2022, a little late compared to the Ungka flyover.

Na-ulihi gawa ang pagsugod naton sang Aganan and mas complicated ang konsepto sang design,” Fruto told Panay News.

Foundation works are underway, said Fruto.

Sige-sige man ang fabrication sang needed nga girders,” he added.

Construction by IBC began in July 2020.

BUHANG AND JIBAO-AN FLYOVERS

Fruto said the completion of these flyovers will be delayed.

Ang pundo ‘ya abi sini progressive, indi one time, although the positive notes nga may pundo para sa next year,” Fruto said.

At the Buhang flyover, Fruto said, they have already installed eight girders while foundation works on the Jibao-an Flyover are ongoing.

The Jibao-an flyover has a length of 390 linear meters and a width of 10.34 meters, while that in Buhang has a length of 340 linear meters and a width of 10.34 meters.

Work on the Jibao-an and Buhang flyovers began in March 2020 by contractors AM Oreta-Allencon Joint Venture and F. Gurrea Construction, Inc., respectively./PN
