4 WV cagers in Asean School Games

MANILA – Four Western Visayas-based players are set to banner the National University Bullpups-Philippines’ title defense in the 2019 Asean School Games boys basketball starting this weekend in Indonesia.


Ilonggo Gerry Abadiano, fresh from representing the country in the FIBA U-19 World Cup, will once again return for the Philippine squad as they aim to retain the gold medal in the competition.


“Of course masaya ako to represent the country again sa international competition,” said the Iloilo City native Abadiano. “Hopefully makatulong ako sa team to go all the way.”


“We were fortunate to win the gold last year so we are hoping that maidepensa namin ‘yung gold namin,” added the former St. Robert’s International Academy Panda Rockets standout.


Aside from Abadiano, three more players from Western Visayas are joining the squad in fellow Ilonggo Menard Songcuya, Bago City, Negros Occidental native Reyland Torres and Silay City native Harold Alarcon


Completing to roster of head coach Goldwyn Monteverde were Terrence Fortea, Carl Tamayo, Kevin Quiambao, Ernest Felicilda, Steve Nash Enriquez, Aaron Buensalida, and Jeffry Mailim.


The Bullpups stand with Singapore and Indonesia in Group A while Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam make up Group B.


Team Philippines first match in the regional meet is on Saturday against Indonesia and it wraps up its assignments in the group stages by taking on Singapore the day after./PN
