FM Stanislav Babarykin of Russia grabbed the solo leadership of the 4th World Chess Championship for People with Disabilities being played at the Tornelo online platform after beating erstwile co-leader and compatriot FM Ilia Lipilin in Round 6 action Wednesday for his sixth straight win the event.
Babarykin now leads by half-point over closest pursuers Harlen Jose Otero Munelo of Venezuela, Ganbat Dashtseren of Mongolia, FM Carlos Larduet Despaigne of Cuba, FM Marcin Molenda of Poland, and FM Sargis Sargissyan of Armenia who each has 5½ points.
Meanwhile, tragedy struck the Philippines’ top two players, with FM Sander Severino beaten by untitled and unrated Ganbat Dashtseren of Mongolia in 62 moves of Symmetrical English, and Jasper Rom losing on time to Zarko Selkovski after 42 moves of a Closed Sicilian. But while Severino and Rom were losing, Darry Bernardo and Henry Lopez won their respective Round 6 outings. Bernardo blasted Ejaz Husain of Bangladesh in 25 moves of a Nimzovich Defense, while Lopez outplayed Luis Anibal Rodriguez Pirela in 45 moves of a Dutch Defense. Bernardo and Lopez climbed up the standings, with Bernardo rising to 13th place officially with 5 points total and Lopez improving to 4½ points and a share of 19th to 42nd places.
With only three rounds to go, both Severino and Rom will be hard pressed to enter the top ten. Both sank to a share of 43rd to 70th places with 4 points each after their losses.
