5-storey and up buildings must have drainage plan – Treñas

ILOILO City – Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said he will require buildings at least five storeys tall to submit drainage outlet plans that do not displace the existing drainage.

“This will be required before any building permit will be issued to ensure the integrity of our existing drainage pipes,” he explained.

Treñas bared the plan following the displacement of a portion of the drainage along Iznart and Arroyo streets in the City Proper district amid heavy rains on Thursday, May 4. Fronting the affected area is the ongoing construction of a condominium building.

Treñas, who is currently in Guam on official trip, said he will be sitting down with the Office of the Building Official (OBO), City Engineer’s Office (CEO) and City Architect’s Office (CAO) when he returns.

He added that an ordinance will be prepared by the City Legal Office and submit it to the Sangguniang Panlungsod for proper consideration.

As of this writing, the city mayor said he is waiting for the report from OBO, CEO, Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO), and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) that responded during the incident.

The aforementioned displacement caused the closure of the portion of the street from traffic due to civil works being undertaken.

Vehicles from J.M. Basa Street took the Arsenal Street to Muelle Loney and turned left to Yulo Street, and back to Iznart Street.

According to PSTMO head Jeck Conlu, the portion of the drainage that was displaced was augmented with cement to make it stable.

It was eventually open to traffic yesterday, he said./PN
