ILOILO City – The city government’s dog pound is now a home to 57 stray dogs over a week after it became operational.
The rescued dogs so far included 42 adults of which 27 were female and 15 male; 15 were puppies.
The Iloilo City Dog Pound and Animal Shelter in Barangay Calajunan, Mandurriao district was inaugurated on June 14. The city government partnered with animal advocate group Rescue Iloilo for this initiative.
The realization of this project was also achieved through the students of the Technical Institute of Iloilo City who helped in the construction of the cages, walls and roofing.
Mayor Jerry Treñas earlier said that dogs in the shelter will be neutered or spayed to prevent them from reproducing; others will be up for adoption.
The city government also tapped restaurants, fast-food chains and hotels for leftovers to feed the dogs in the facility.
As “lesson learned” also from the pandemic, Treñas said it is better to have many hands than alone because with many hands, many things can be done.
The dog shelter project was also being assisted by the City Veterinary Office (CVO), General Services Office (GSO) and City Engineer’s Office.
The CVO will oversee the shelter’s operation./PN
